Letter to the editor: Put people first

To the editor:

For a while now, I’ve resolved to absorb information from sources I would not necessarily agree with. As we live in an ever-polarized society in terms of its diverse views, I believe this habit should be embraced by all of us — hence my reading of George Will’s recent column, “Sensitive didn’t always mean sensible in 2020.” I am not here to argue whether or not I agree with the substance of his discussion. However, I strongly feel that it is incumbent upon me to draw attention to his use of wording: “Margot, a 6-year old Down syndrome girl…” The point he was trying to make was ultimately lost with me when he neglected to use person-first language; Margot happens to be a 6-year-old girl with Down syndrome.
