Letter to the editor: It doesn’t have to be this way

To the editor:

The COVID situation is getting right back to where it was at its height. Thousands are dying each day. The rate of infection is one of the worst in the world. It was reported that some Southern states were begging KU’s hospital to accept patients they could not treat.

The sad thing is it does not have to be like this. Vaccinations are available to everyone. They are begging people. Conservatives in this country have made it political. Forty-five percent of Republicans say they will not get vaccinated. Where is the logic? These people are both selfish and stupid. We will never defeat this virus if people refuse to cooperate. To me these people are unpatriotic. Even Donald Trump has endorsed the vaccine. I understand Europeans refer to us as The USA, The Union of Stupid Americans.

I see this as a survival of the fittest. In this case, the smartest who get vaccinated and wear masks stay healthy, most probably will survive, where those who don’t may not survive. They made their choice and now will eventually face the consequences. I know it sounds mean, but it’s hard to be sympathetic for those who get sick because they refused the vaccine when it was easily available. I just feel sympathy for the medical staff who have been worked and stressed so much to treat such ungrateful patients.
