Letter to the editor: Recycling idea

To the editor:

It’s good to see Lawrence will be getting $1.6 million in federal aid to help the homeless (April 16 Journal-World). In one recent Journal-World article about homelessness, a plan to put out trash bins at or near some sites has been proposed. Hopefully a few large recycling carts can also be placed at some sites. When they’re full, the occupants of sites could wheel them out to a predesignated spot where the city could easily access the carts, collect recyclables and leave empty carts for site occupants to return to their sites. I think this could help the homeless feel they are doing something of value to the environment, and they also should feel more a part of the city. A few homeless residents might take enough interest in recycling to ask about working as a volunteer in the recycling business or even consider getting at least a part-time job connected with recycling.
