Letter to the editor: Limit benefits

To the editor:

The city of Lawrence and city commissioners have had their heads in the sand for the last 60 years.

Lawrence is known in the hobo and professional homeless world as the place to go for free food, donations and a place to live.

We need to start checking backgrounds and help only longtime Lawrence people.

We have animal, housing, and vagrancy laws, so let’s appoint some homeless officers to check these people and tell them to move down the road if they do not qualify. Other cities are doing it, and it works very well. They just do not talk about it.

Compare this to what the taxpayer is paying for tents, motel rooms, utilities, cleanup and food.

John Edwards,

Lawrence
