Letter to the editor: Shameful

To the editor:

Once again the stance of Kansas Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran on judicial matters is completely shameful. A prior instance was 2011 when they blocked an excellent moderate nominee for the federal bench, former Kansas Attorney General Steve Six, from even getting a hearing. Now they have joined the hypocritical power play by President Donald Trump and Sen. Mitch McConnell to fill a Supreme Court vacancy in record time on the eve of a critical election.

It is extremely disrespectful to the memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to violate her dying wish while she lies in state in the Capitol. Much more serious is the hypocrisy and bad precedent of this rush to judgment. In denying Merrick Garland a hearing in 2016, the “rationale” was that the voice of the people should be heard in the election nine months later. Now they are clearly afraid of what that voice will say on Nov. 3. Roberts’ contention that the president and Senate majority being from the same party changes the equation is absolutely correct: It means they have the raw power impose this travesty on the nation.

Make your voice heard on Nov. 3 and again in 2022, when Sen. Moran’s name will be on the ballot.

Paul Enos,

Lawrence
