Letter to the editor: Torn, undecided?

To the editor:

My neighbor and I are close friends. He is a Republican who voted for President Donald Trump in 2016 and will vote for him again this year. I am a Democrat and will vote for Joe Biden. I remember making an exception in 2008 to vote for John McCain in the presidential election. I knew his record of reaching out to the other side, and I deeply respect him as a patriotic war hero, may he rest in peace.

My neighbor and I have enough in common to transcend our political divide. We both like astronomy, photography and road trips. I fondly remember driving together from Lawrence to Casper, Wyo., to view the total eclipse of the sun in August 2017. We don’t discuss politics. All I ask of my fellow readers who may be torn and undecided is that you take a long, unflinching look at the character and record of each candidate individually. Then ask, “Who is best suited for the highest office in our land, president of the United States of America?”

Gene Deegan,

Lawrence
