Letter to the editor: A facile editorial

To the editor:

The Journal-World fell far short of its standards in its editorial “Find a way to extend road” on Sunday. The editorial is facile and in no way recognizes the complexity of the issue.

It is immaterial to state that the proposed road will not go through the dog park. In fact, the proposed road will eliminate the gravel path that is currently walked every day by multiple users of the dog park.

Perhaps most egregiously, the editorial belittles opponents of the road. Comments such as “a bark worse than its bite,” “loud complaints,” “loud voices of opposition” and “an old-fashioned not-in-my-back-yard contest” are demeaning. The group has done its due diligence. We have studied past years of city documents, we have consulted city officials, and we have reviewed a recent study by KDOT exploring answers to traffic problems on K-10. We are not merely making loud noises!

No one is saying that YSC has no congestion problems. But to state that the proposed road is the only solution is to ignore the complexity of the problem.

Your editorial criticizes the City Commission, but it should commend them for being willing to explore all options before committing limited resources.

Lawrence
