Letter to the editor: They finally found him

To the editor:

Forty years ago, when I was a young woman living in a tiny town in the middle of Kansas, a story was told of a farmer who had one of his sheds full of guns, ammunition and assault weapons. He and his like-minded friends would hold meetings to discuss overthrowing the federal government … when the time was right. I thought it was a bizarre idea and a strange way to spend leisure time.

I didn’t give that farfetched story much thought until Donald Trump was elected.

Fast forward 40 years to the 2016 election, a horrifying day in American history. This country had just elected a very dangerous man to be the president of the United States. Trump has, through his rhetoric and actions, shown that he is a white supremacist. Bit by bit he is destroying our democracy. His election was the key that unlocked the floodgates unleashing white militia groups all over this country to spew their hate and violence.

I knew the day Trump was elected that this country would suffer immense damage. If he is reelected, it will only get worse.

That farmer was pretty old when I lived back in that tiny town so he may be dead now. But I suspect that his descendents and the other “club” members finally found, in Trump, the mad man they’ve been waiting for all these years.
