Letter to the editor: No backbone

To the editor:

I have been a registered Republican in Kansas for 43 years, and I have never been more furious with our two U.S. senators. Donald Trump’s personal meltdown has moved from embarrassing delusion and petulance to subversion of our democratic norms and active sabotage of the Constitution he took an oath to protect and defend. The time has long passed for the senior leaders in the Republican party to speak out for what is right and to repudiate their standard bearer and his burn-it-all-down tactics. But all we hear from almost all Republican senators is crickets. Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran, are you really going to stand idly by while your leader trashes our democracy? Is the hope of keeping Georgia’s two Senate seats in your party’s hands worth making the American people pay that price? That isn’t public service; it is dereliction of duty.

As Edmund Burke said, all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Sen. Moran, you recently announced your intention to run for reelection in 2022. Why should we send you back if you are unwilling to do the hard parts of your job that call for integrity and backbone?

Rick Golub,

Lawrence
