Letter to the editor: School suggestions

To the editor:

Since we are discussing a new name for the school on Sixth Street, let us consider some Black American heroes. Two women, suffragists and abolitionists, come to mind: Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. Four male heroes come to mind: Frederick Douglass, George Washington Carver, Crispus Attucks and Martin Luther King Jr. And an institution of learning comes to mind: Tuskegee Elementary (almost poetic).

The halls of the school on Sixth Street could be a memorial to Black American heroes, teaching our children to imitate such people. Thankful for our browner family’s achievements and proud.

Rod and Margie Hinkle,

Lawrence
