Letter to the editor: Brees’ patriotism

To the editor:

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees recently created a firestorm by his statement regarding kneeling for the national anthem. Brees said, “I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America.” He said when he hears the national anthem and sees the flag, he thinks of all those who have sacrificed, including his two grandfathers in World War II and “those throughout the civil rights movement of the ’60s”.

He then said that when players all stand it “shows that we are all in this together, we can do better and that we are all part of the solution.”

Brees was widely condemned by sport figures and commentators for his expression of patriotism.

Brees is a model citizen. He spends millions of dollars and countless hours helping poor people in New Orleans.

Sadly, Brees promptly apologized, and when that did not satisfy his critics, he made a second apology.

Last October an NBA general manager tweeted: “Fight for freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.” The Chinese Communist Party threatened the NBA’s profits and the NBA quickly apologized. Lebron James, who apparently forgot he was a social justice warrior, said the NBA general manager was “not educated on the situation” and had “no consideration for the consequences and ramifications of his tweet.”

Expressions of American patriotism are condemned and brutal Chinese dictators are defended.

Wake up, fans!
