Letter to the editor: Too inconvenient?

To the editor:

This letter is in regard to the city’s intent to build an access road along the Mutt Run to the Youth Sports Complex.

Having watched and coached games at YSC for three decades, I can tell you that slow exits are normal. We wait in line at the bank, Starbucks and any drive-thru, so it’s not like we’re unfamiliar with the concept. No one expects to leave the Lied Center or Allen Fieldhouse and be home in a matter of minutes. If pressed for time, one can always pull their child and leave the game early. I prefer to visit with players and their parents for 10 to 15 minutes after games. Most of the cars have exited by then.

Would it be possible to set the time longer on the traffic light at West 27th Street and Kansas Highway 10 on game days? Is it possible to stagger the start times of games more? There are plans to widen K-10 to four lanes in the near future. Will the intersection be redesigned at that time? If so, does it make sense to affect Mutt Run for a temporary fix?

A stroll through the dog park with your canine pal is a great way to start the day. Out-of-town visitors are always impressed by the size, openness and safety of our park. Please don’t sacrifice these qualities for what I consider an unnecessary convenience.

Jeanne Heitzman,

Lawrence
