Letter to the editor: Trump is no Churchill

To the editor:

Recently President Trump and his press secretary Kayleigh McEnany compared him to Churchill, as both great leaders are inspiring to their people in times of difficulty.

In 1957, I had the privilege of hearing Churchill addressing the students of Trinity College at the University of Dublin. When Churchill finished, a student got up, stating his speech was the greatest rubbish he had ever heard. Churchill did not get angry but asked the student why he felt that way. What followed was a lovely discussion between Churchill and the student. I thought of Churchill, “What a great man!” I cannot say the same for Trump.

Another thing I remember of Churchill was the pictures of him visiting parts of London destroyed by German air raids and giving encouragement to his people. Counter that with Trump walking through empty space, cleared by riot police of “enemies,” on his way to church holding the Bible.
