Letter to the editor: Protect cultural sites

To the editor:

Donald Trump’s threat to destroy Iranian cultural sites is counterproductive and serves no military purpose. I visited many of those monuments while serving at the American Embassy in Tehran 50 years ago. The greatest of them are part of world history reaching back more than 2,000 years. Attacking any of them would not deter Iran and would invite retaliation on American historic sites.

The United States government used to exercise better judgment. Though American bombers demolished several major Japanese cities during World War II, our leaders spared the city of Kyoto because of its historical and cultural importance.
