Letter to the editor: Focus on homeless, not jail

To the editor:

I would like to see Douglas County and the City of Lawrence focus on providing shelter and programs for the homeless over enlarging our jail, especially since we have limited resources. I think jail overcrowding can be reduced by other means and without having to farm out inmates. I recommend the book “Not A Crime To Be Poor,” written by lawyer Peter Edelman, as useful background reading on the subject of law intersecting with poverty.
