Letter to the editor: Impeach again
To the editor:
I just read an article on my MSNBC newsfeed that suggests that, once the new Congress is seated, it should immediately begin a second impeachment of Donald J. Trump on charges of obstruction of justice and abuse of power, especially the whole pardoning of war criminals and his colleagues in treason.
According to this article, “under the Constitution, the possible punishments for an impeached official are limited to two: removal and disqualification from ever holding office again.” The article goes on to say that, in 1862, the Senate decided that removal from office and disqualification could be voted on separately.
Which brings us back to impeaching Donald J. Trump for a second time. This time, even if everything plays out long after Trump has either left or been physically removed from the White House, Congress can draft articles of impeachment aimed solely on blocking him from ever running for office again.
This seems like a good idea to me.
And not just for the safety and security and continued existence of the country and, indeed, the world but also for the Republicans because it means that he can’t be a contender in the 2024 election and therefore can’t interfere with the party’s ability to propose and select and nominate other presidential hopefuls.
