Letter to the editor: Support the arts

To the editor:

On July 25, the Journal-World published “Lawrence arts and culture organizations say they’re in dire financial straits amid pandemic, request relief funding.” The article’s facts are alarming and should alert citizens to the potential loss of gems that make Lawrence unique and special. According to the Americans for the Arts’ website, one-third of Douglas County cultural and arts organization are uncertain whether they will survive COVID-19. Such organizations contribute to the vibrancy of a community by bringing its members together, breaking down barriers, prompting participation and promoting healing, which all lead to its resiliency. They also generate much revenue from patrons who visit cultural destinations and spend at restaurants and hotels. As community members, we all must become ready to support them in any way possible.

Denise Stone,

Lawrence
