Letter to the editor: Just don’t do it

To the editor:

My goodness, people. What is it that the city commissioners don’t understand?

Since most meetings by them have been canceled, they obviously know that Lawrence is in the middle of a lockdown and pandemic crisis. As such, that means a lot of residents are losing jobs, money and insurance. They won’t have the cash needed when the next tax jump hits us.

Really, it’s not so hard to admit a mistake and decide to do something else. As an example of good leadership, maybe you should realize the bike boulevard is just not something that is essential. That’s a key word. We are asking people not to work if they are not essential to the needs of the city. Only go to the store to buy things that are essential. So, would it be out of the realm of possibility that the city leadership not put in the bike boulevard since it probably isn’t essential?

Or maybe, since the city leaders really don’t care what we think, they should do this instead. Rather than swapping sources for other projects to find the $66K they don’t have, maybe they could swap the $328K allocated to this foolish project and put it someplace that is more essential to our needs. The city is losing lots of money this year from the pandemic. Maybe their gee-whiz projects should be curtailed at this time so that we can recover monetarily first. The city can’t afford it, so would it really be a problem to just not do it?

Roger Powell,
