Letter to the editor: What’s at stake?

To the editor:

The coming 2020 general election is so very important, not only for the presidency, but for all members of Congress, particularly the Senate.

We are only one less Ruth Bader Ginsburg away from having another Republican conservative Supreme Court member whose presence will change the make-up of the court, perhaps for the next 50 years. Many of the gains for civil rights in the 1960s, of environmental statues during the Clinton, Bush and Obama years, recent gay rights legislation, women’s health issues encompassed in Planned Parenthood are at risk as long as Moscow Mitch McConnell and a packed idealistic conservative court are allowed to flourish.

So, fellow Americans, more is at stake than you think. Not just the elimination of an inept and morally bankrupt president, but a real change to our democratic way of life. Democratic candidates should not be distracted by the latest Judge Brett Kavanaugh revelations , but remain focused on voter turnout, winning the Senate and retaining control of the House, as well as electing a Democratic president who will help reverse the huge damage that is being done to our environment, the massacre of our children caused by ineffective gun legislation and the cruel separation of families at the border. Not to be forgotten is the uncharacteristic Republican massive debt caused by Trump’s tax cut for the rich, which has furthered the already huge inequality of wealth among America’s citizens.
