Letter to the editor: Poor character
To the editor:
A city’s character can be judged by how it treats the least fortunate. Lawrence has failed this test.
Thanks to the Journal-World’s revelation that city officials have kept millions of our unused tax dollars in the bank, we know they preferred to squirrel this money away rather than help with the desperate shortfall facing the homeless shelter. The shelter’s situation isn’t new so city commissioners had time to find ways to help the homeless. It is a stain on our collective conscience that our elected leaders failed, causing the shelter to turn some of its clients out on the street.
We await word that the City of Lawrence will rectify its neglect and provide all the funding needed for the homeless shelter.
Cheri Varvil and Frank Lingo,
Lawrence
