Letter to the editor: Approve dress code

To the editor:

The proposed school district code policy addresses many of the problems that have surrounded the dress code for years. Dress codes are necessary to prevent inappropriate clothing from being worn to school, but cause issues over self-control and the blame of female students. The proposed policy solves a great deal of controversy by addressing that students are allowed to show skin up to an extent and that administrators are not permitted to designate what they think of as “inappropriate clothing.” Although there are many individuals that support the proposed policy, there are others who choose to stick with their beliefs, which could pose problems in the Lawrence community. I believe that the proposed policy should be approved since it clearly states what is and what is not allowed at school and does not leave much room for interpretation. Other districts should adopt this policy as I feel it protects students from discrimination and unjust convictions. I applaud the district board members who created this proposed policy and believe it truly betters our school system and Lawrence.
