Letter to the editor: How much longer?

To the editor:

Now that the dust – or slime – has settled on 2019 legislative session, let’s remember that two conservative leaders, Sen. Susan Wagle and Sen. Jim Denning, were responsible for thwarting the will of the governor, the majority of legislators, small hospitals, medical professionals, local chambers of commerce, and the majority of Kansans, but most especially 150,000 of the most needy of their constituents.

They want to spend the summer ‘studying’ Medicaid expansion, an issue they have been aware of since 2012, when the Supreme Court decided that states could opt out. Or will they be searching for new roadblocks? Or just hoping that their party will finally succeed in destroying Obamacare in Congress or the courts? How many Kansans have suffered needlessly or died for lack of affordable health care during seven years of stalling? And how many more before the ‘inevitable’ expansion of Medicaid, as Mr. Denning put it, apparently without irony — or compassion.

Paul Enos,

Lawrence
