Letter to the editor: Unfair policy

To the editor:

While you feel the city of Lawrence sidewalk maintenance policy may make sense, it is grossly unfair to those of us who have sidewalks on their property. Some property owners have sidewalks while those living across the street do not. Neighbors use the sidewalks, often on a daily basis, without contributing anything to their maintenance. The city also requires that property owners clear snow from the sidewalks within 48 hours or face fines and added costs of snow removal. Property owners must also clear snow plowed onto those sidewalks by city snowplows and pay for salt damage to the concrete.

Sidewalk maintenance should be paid for by the city with costs passed on to all property owners on an equal basis through the property tax system.

John Adams,

Lawrence
