Letter to the editor: In praise of cursive

To the editor:

I read with great interest your article about the young lady who won the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest representing Kansas.

As a former elementary school teacher of 37 years, I know from firsthand experience how vitally important the proper, sequential teaching of handwriting can be to the healthy neurological development of elementary school age children. It makes me literally want to weep that so many school districts in our country have dropped this instruction from their required course of study. Congratulations to the student and to her English teacher for encouraging her to enter the contest.
