Letter to the editor: Trump’s ‘niche’

To the editor:

Those of us who have children and grandchildren have long found Donald J. Trump’s attitude about the future distressing and Monday offered nothing new. MSNBC, by way of the Daily Beast, reported that Trump skipped out on the G-7 meeting about the climate crisis and the fires in the Amazon. He claimed, among other things, that Emmanuel Macron had created this meeting’s agenda to embarrass him, Trump, and that the topics to be discussed were “niche issues.”

According to a definition I found on the internet, “niche,” as an adjective, refers to “products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.” In other words, the president of the United States is intimating that the single greatest threat to the survival of all life on Earth appeals only to a “small, specialized section of the population.” The man has put our survival on a par with a bar in a laundromat or personalized craft beer or pizza cones.

And he has suggested that even putting these topics up for discussion at a meeting of world leaders is a way of embarrassing him. Because the only niche Trump cares about is the one in which he can make money.

Oh, and by the way, he wants to hold next year’s G-7 summit at his struggling Doral golf resort.
