Herbert Melvin Smith

Herbert Melvin Smith, 82, of Tonganoxie, Kan., passed away on March 24, 2016, at Neuvant House of Lawrence. His life was celebrated by family and friends on Sunday, March 27, at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Tonganoxie. Burial followed in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie. Herb was born on December 27, 1933, in rural Tonganoxie to Frank and Eva Smith. He attended Tonganoxie schools and retired from Cities Services Gas Company after 37 years of employment. Herbie was passionate about cars and fixing things, always to be found tinkering in his garage or outdoors with a tool in his hand. He enjoyed spending time at his farm in Oskaloosa, where he and his family made decades of memories. Survivors include Irma Smith, his wife of 44 years; children Ginger (Doug) Wehner of Lawrence, Jim (Charlene) Crain of Tonganoxie, Jackie Crain of Tonganoxie, Frank (Jeanne) Smith of Tonganoxie, Joy (Bill) Murr of McLouth, and Della Smith of Overland Park; 10 grandchildren and 13 great­ grandchildren; sisters Francis (Larry) Moore of Lawrence and Mary Ketchum of Tonganoxie; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Joe Smith and Bob Smith; and sister Wanda Robb.
