WICHITA — Several records for low temperatures and at least one for snow in Kansas have been broken this week as unseasonably cold weather moved across the region, the National Weather Service said.

A large weather system over the Rockies this week pushed an unprecedented cold front into Kansas, National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Kleinsasser told the Wichita Eagle. Among new records this week were a low of 47 degrees in Wichita on Tuesday, where the previous record had been 48 in 1890, and low Wednesday of 41 degrees in Russell, where the previous record was 44 in 1962.

Several records were set on Wednesday for the coolest high temperature, he said, including that Wichita reached a high of only 50 degrees, breaking the previous record of 64 in 1910. Salina also broke its record with a high of 49 degrees, far below the previous record of 62 in 1962.

Goodland also saw its earliest measurable snow on record Wednesday with about a half-inch, Kleinsasser said.

Several more records could fall on Friday as the cold front hovers over the state, he said.

“By the time we hit Saturday, it will be warming up nicely, so no more records,” Kleinsasser said. The highs on Saturday could be in the upper 70s to mid-80s.
