A severe thunderstorm watch and flash flood watch have been issued for Douglas County on Thursday night.

There is potential for hail up to the size of baseballs and wind gusts of up to 60 mph, according to Kyle Poage, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka. The severe thunderstorm watch came into effect at 4:25 p.m. Thursday and will last until midnight.

A watch means that conditions are favorable for the weather event to occur.

A flash flood warning has also been issued for Douglas County beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday and remaining in effect until 7 a.m. Friday. Poage said Douglas County could receive up to 3 inches of rain.

Poage said tornadoes were also a possibility but added that there was not a high chance of those materializing.

The potential for storms continues during the day on Friday, but Poage said they were not expected to be severe. Friday night, there is an 80% chance for showers and thunderstorms.
