The room at the DoubleTree Hotel in Overland Park was nearly empty after delayed election results caused a watch party for Gov. Jeff Coyler to end before the race had been called.

The band made the most noise at an Overland Park watch party for Gov. Jeff Colyer on Tuesday night.

As of midnight, Colyer had not come out to address the crowd at the Overland Park DoubleTree Hotel. A representative of the Johnson County Republican Party said he didn’t expect Colyer to make a speech at the rally, given that election returns still showed the governor was in a virtual dead heat with Republican Secretary of State Kris Kobach.

By midnight approximately 75 members of the public still remained at the watch party, as hotel staff started disassembling the banquet room. A country band that had been playing since shortly after 6 p.m. continued to belt out country hits from multiple decades to entertain the crowd.

Shortly after midnight, the Secretary of State’s website listed Kobach with 107,644 votes to Colyer’s 106,692 votes. However, a large number of votes in Johnson County — Colyer’s home county and the most populous county in the state — hadn’t yet been counted.

According to the Johnson County Election Office, about 445 precincts were still left to report their results. Of the approximately 55 precincts that had reported results in Johnson County, Colyer was winning the Johnson County vote by a margin of 46 percent to 33 percent over Kobach.
