School board to hear more about middle school STEAM switch, plus reports on academics, behavior and attendance

The Lawrence school board on Wednesday is scheduled to hear more about Liberty Memorial Central Middle School’s transition to a STEAM curriculum.

The board is meeting on Wednesday this week instead of Monday because four of the seven board members were traveling back from the National School Boards Association’s Annual Conference and Exposition on Monday.

When the board last met, on March 25, board members had requested more details on possible start and end times at Liberty Memorial Central, plus the school’s proposed calendar, busing costs and other issues associated with the curriculum change, which will take effect next school year. Board members at that meeting expressed particular concern about a suggested 9:45 a.m. Wednesday start time at the school and associated transportation issues.

The board will also:

• Hear a quarterly Safe and Supportive Schools Equity Update, including data related to academics, behavior and attendance and restorative justice practices.

• Hear a report from the Lawrence Virtual School E-Cybermission team about the “mindset” of students, teachers and parents regarding the use of artificial intelligence, or AI, in an academic setting.

• Hear a report on attendance and behavior data for students who transferred to other schools last year when the district closed Pinckney Elementary and Broken Arrow Elementary. A summary of the report in the agenda indicated positive attendance outcomes and a reduction in behavior incidents.

The school board will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at district headquarters, 100 McDonald Drive. The meeting is open to the public and can also be live-streamed on the district’s YouTube channel, youtube.com/@USD497/streams.
