Lawrence-area high school students can learn more about an exchange program that sends young people to different parts of the U.S. at an informational meeting Wednesday at the Lawrence Public Library.

The first area residents to participate in the American Exchange Project took their trips this summer, and Sonja Czarnecki, a Bishop Seabury history teacher who oversees the program for area residents, said she hoped to make next year even more successful.

As the Journal-World reported, the program sends recent high school graduates to stay with host families in a different part of the country, where they may experience a different political and cultural landscape and meet other young people with different backgrounds and opinions. Local residents can also host out-of-state participants and get involved in the program in other ways.

The informational meeting at the library will start at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. For additional information about the program, contact Czarnecki at sczarnecki@americanexchangeproject.org.
