The last mail ballots have been counted in the Lawrence school board primary election, and Elizabeth Stephens now holds a seven-vote lead over Melissa Clissold for the final spot on the general election ballot.
The Douglas County Clerk’s Office announced that it did not receive any eligible mail ballots on Friday, which was the last day that ballots postmarked on the day of the election could be counted.
Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew said it’s possible that more votes could be counted when the Douglas County Commission considers adding provisional ballots during its canvass on Aug. 16. He said there were about 110 provisional ballots that could be added to the vote count, but he didn’t have an estimate of how many of them might be counted.
The five candidates ahead of Stephens and Clissold haven’t changed since election night: Kelly Jones is in first place, Kay Emerson is second, G.R. Gordon-Ross is third, Andrew Nussbaum is fourth and Nate Morsches is fifth. On election night, Stephens and Clissold were tied for sixth. Only the top six candidates in the primary can move on to the general election on Nov. 2, where the candidates will vie for the three open seats on the seven-member school board.
