The Lawrence school district is still hoping to hold graduation ceremonies for seniors, despite the coronavirus pandemic that led to the cancellation of most school events.

But Julie Boyle, a spokeswoman for the school district, said the district doesn’t yet know when those ceremonies may be. She said the district formed a committee to discuss options but no decisions have been made.

“(Superintendent Anthony) Lewis is committed to celebrating the 2020 senior class as soon as we are cleared to do so,” Boyle said in an email. “Due to the ‘stay at home’ order, we’re in a wait-and-see mode.”

The graduation ceremonies for the district’s two high schools and its virtual school were originally scheduled for May 16, 19 and 20.

In March, Gov. Laura Kelly ordered school buildings closed to the public for the remainder of the school year to help slow the spread of COVID-19, which led school districts to cancel or postpone public events. Kelly also put the state under a stay-at-home order until May 3.
