A suspect with pending felony cases is in custody following a shooting at a Lawrence apartment complex.
The shooting, which happened Friday afternoon at Hawks Pointe complex just south of West Seventh and Florida streets, critically injured a man, who was taken first to LMH Health then by helicopter to KU hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.
According to a patient report, the injured man is 23 years old and suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was said to be in critical condition and on a ventilator.
Police said around 3:45 p.m. that the suspect was in custody after an extensive four-hour search. They believe the suspect went to the apartment before noon Friday, knocked on the door, then shot a man at the entrance.
The suspect was apprehended following a traffic stop in a neighborhood near Kasold Drive and Peterson Road. Police said three individuals were in the car, including the suspect, and all surrendered without incident.
The Journal-World has learned that the suspect is Temujin James Jernigan, who is now facing an attempted first-degree murder charge. Jernigan has two pending felony cases in Douglas County, both for criminal threat — one incident on July 21, 2023, and one on March 15, 2025. Jernigan was also reportedly arrested Friday in a drug case unrelated to the shooting.
