A Lawrence Police Department patrol vehicle is pictured June 28, 2022.

A woman called dispatch on Thursday morning after seeing an apparently intoxicated man climbing a metal archway sculpture in Watson Park.

The call came in just before 10 a.m. after the woman saw a shirtless man climbing the sculpture, according to a social media post from the Lawrence Police Department. The first officer on scene found the man standing in the park with blood on him and hitting himself on the side. When the officer approached to assist, the man took off his shorts.

“He appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and having a mental health episode,” the post said. “As of now, officers believe he either cut himself or was hurt while climbing the sculpture.”

Paramedics arrived on the scene and took the man to the hospital to be treated for his wounds and to receive mental health care.
