Crews worked to extinguish a fire at around 5:30 p.m. at a house in the 1100 block of Connecticut Street.
Acting Deputy Chief Tyler Wade said in an email to the Journal-World that at 5:29 p.m., Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical was dispatched to the scene, and firefighters observed heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the home. The fire had also spread to a detached garage on the property. A total of 26 firefighters responded to the incident, he said.

No people or animals were injured, he said, and the cause is to be determined.
At the scene, there were ladders on the front of the two-story home. By around 6:20 p.m. the fire appeared to be extinguished and crews were rolling up their hoses.
