Residents have a chance to see their local police dogs in action on Sunday as the Lawrence Police Department’s patrol service dogs compete in the 2nd Annual K-9 Games.
Three dogs from the Lawrence Police Department will participate in the games from 1 to 3 p.m. at Stormont Vail Events Center in Topeka, according to a release from the department.
LPD dog Mack will compete with handler Kevin Henderson. Taz will compete with handler Austin Twite, and Shadow will compete with handler Joshua Doncouse.
The games will put the dogs’ training and agility on display against service dogs from the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Topeka Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol and Overland Park Police Department.
Douglas County will still be under the watchful eye, or nose, of Douglas County Sheriff’s Office service dog Ciro and his handler, Deputy Austin Abram, who will not be competing in this year’s games, said George Diepenbrock with the sheriff’s office.
The event is hosted by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office. Entry is free, but donations are encouraged to benefit Special Olympics Kansas.
