Lawrence police arrested a man on Tuesday after a disturbance initially reported as an assault with an AR-15 style rifle. The weapon turned out to be a paintball gun, police determined.
Just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, officers rushed to the parking garage next to the Lawrence Public Library, in the 700 block of Vermont Street, after someone reported being threatened with a firearm by a gunman who then left the scene, according to a release from the Lawrence Police Department. No injuries were reported.
While an officer was driving to the reported disturbance, the officer encountered a vehicle near the intersection of Sixth and Maine streets that matched the description of the suspect’s vehicle. The officer stopped the car and found a paintball gun resembling an AR-15 style rifle, according to the release.
The officer then took the driver, Skyler Jameson King, 40, of Lawrence, into custody on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault.
King has since been charged in Douglas County District Court with two felony counts of criminal threat in connection with the incident, according to court records.
