A Lawrence man was charged on Thursday after he allegedly attacked a child using a 12-inch knife on New Year’s Day.
Pascual Alonso, 25, is charged with one felony count of aggravated battery and one felony count of child abuse, according to charging documents. The charges are in connection with an incident that happened just after noon on Wednesday in the 700 block of West 25th Terrace.
According to court documents, the alleged victim is about 14 years old. Multiple minors between the ages of 2 and 6 are listed as witnesses. Police were initially dispatched to the area in connection with a fight, according to the Lawrence Police Department call log.
The incident was domestic in nature, which limits the amount of information that police will provide, said Sgt. Drew Fennelly with the Lawrence Police Department. He said that the victim sustained minor injuries and did not need immediate medical attention. Alonso was arrested at the scene without further incident.
Alonso was released on Thursday afternoon on a $30,000 own-recognizance bond with GPS monitoring, meaning he was not required to pay any money to be released from jail but may be charged that amount if he fails to appear in court. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 21.
