A Lawrence man was charged on Thursday after he allegedly attacked a child using a 12-inch knife on New Year’s Day.

Pascual Alonso, 25, is charged with one felony count of aggravated battery and one felony count of child abuse, according to charging documents. The charges are in connection with an incident that happened just after noon on Jan. 1, in the 700 block of W. 25th Terrace.

According to court documents the alleged victim is about 14 years old. There are multiple minors listed as witnesses to the incident between the ages of 2 and 6-years-old. Police were initially dispatched to the area in connection with a fight, according to the Lawrence Police Department call log.

The incident was domestic nature which limits the amount of information that can be released, said Sgt. Drew Fennelly with the Lawrence Police Department. He said that the victim only sustained minor injuries and did not need immediate medical attention. Pascual was arrested at the scene without further incident.

He is being held without bond.
