A 22-year-old Eudora man was sentenced on Thursday to 14 months in prison, suspended to probation, for threatening a group of teenagers who were visiting Lawrence from Franklin County last spring.
The teens testified at an October preliminary hearing for defendant Corey Newman that Newman, who appeared to be intoxicated, had pulled a gun and pointed it at them late at night as they sat in a car in downtown Lawrence. A Lawrence police detective testified that Newman, when questioned, told him he had raised his shirt to show the teens a “fake C02 gun” but he denied pulling it or pointing it at them.
On Jan. 2, Newman pleaded no contest to two felony counts of criminal threat in a plea deal with the state. Newman had originally faced four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, as the Journal-World reported. The plea agreement noted that there would be “no deadly weapon finding.”
Newman addressed the court prior to being sentenced, acknowledging that it “looks like I was a troublemaker” but promising to do better. Judge Amy Hanley ordered Newman to get a job and required him to pay costs associated with the case.
