A third winter storm has descended on Lawrence, bringing snow and extreme cold and leading to the closure of schools, courts, state offices and other entities Tuesday.

Lawrence received just over an inch of snow as of Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka, which expects blowing snow and single-digit temperatures with below-zero wind chills to last all day.

Few accidents were reported as of 9 a.m., however. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported two non-injury crashes since the snow started Monday night, and Lawrence Police have not reported any so far, though both agencies advise motorists to use caution. Roads in the county are snow-covered, and visibility is limited, according to a post from the sheriff’s office.

Central Lawrence received about 1.3 inches of snow, while about 2 inches fell near Clinton Lake, the weather service said. Winds are forecast to blow at about 14 mph throughout the day and gusting up to 23 mph.

Snow is expected to continue into the afternoon with 3.5 additional inches predicted between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m.
