Residents of 6 apartment units displaced after overnight fire
An overnight fire Wednesday on West 26th Street that displaced multiple residents is currently under investigation.
Emergency crews were alerted around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday after initial reports to the Douglas County Emergency Communications Center indicated that a porch was on fire and that passersby could see flames from Iowa Street.
When firefighters arrived to 1821 W. 26th St. they observed heavy smoke and fire on the exterior of an apartment building. The flames extended from the first floor to the third floor, a spokesperson for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical said.
Residents of six apartment units were displaced by the fire and were being assisted Wednesday by the Red Cross. The remainder of the residents who were evacuated were able to return to their apartments.
No injuries were reported among residents or firefighters.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
