A Lawrence teen was arrested Wednesday morning after police say he led them on a chase in a stolen vehicle, crashed into a pole and then fled on foot through western Lawrence.

The Lawrence Police Department said on social media that the vehicle, a GMC Yukon, had been reported stolen on Tuesday from outside the owner’s home near 24th and Louisiana streets. At 11 a.m. Wednesday, an officer spotted the vehicle with multiple people inside in the 4700 block of Overland Drive.

The post said police followed the vehicle onto Folks Road, then Peterson Road, then Monterey Way and used spikes to pop one of its tires. A video with the post shows the vehicle keeps driving on a flat tire, drifting into the wrong lane and swerving, until it tries to make a left turn back onto Overland Drive and crashes into a pole.

After the crash, the video shows one person running from the smoking vehicle and another coming out of it slowly with hands up.

Police said they chased down and arrested the fleeing suspect without anyone being hurt. They said that two other teens surrendered; a 17-year-old who was taken to the hospital for evaluation and then released to a parent, and a 14-year-old who was reported as a runaway and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.

According to the Douglas County Jail booking log, Jacob Alexander Hampton, 18, was arrested at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on suspicion of possession of stolen property valued between $1,500 and $25,000, fleeing in an attempt to elude police and operating a stolen vehicle.
