A 50-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon when his motorcycle struck the roundabout at Lake Pointe Drive and Clinton Parkway, according to Lawrence police.

Witnesses called officers to the scene at 4:12 p.m. after finding the man and his wrecked 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the roadway. He was taken to a Topeka trauma center, where he was pronounced dead. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

Police did not immediately release the identity of the motorcyclist.

A man who identified himself as a coworker was at the roundabout Friday afternoon placing a pot of yellow flowers as a memorial. The man said he had seen the coworker earlier Thursday and described him as a “really good guy.”

The Lawrence Police Accident Investigations Unit is investigating the crash.

This is the second fatal motorcycle crash at that intersection this summer. On July 9, a 44-year-old man died at the site. Police said at the time that they believed high speeds played a role in the crash. Officers were notified just before 1 a.m. when a passerby saw the victim — later identified as David Craig Evans, of Gallatin, Tennessee — lying on the south side of the roundabout’s island.
