A woman who formerly lived in Lawrence is accusing a man she met through a dating app of secretly filming their sexual activity and later sending the footage anonymously to her boyfriend.
The man, Garrett Christopher Lynch, of Kansas City, Missouri, is now facing a felony count of breach of privacy in Douglas County District Court.
According to the affidavit in support of Lynch’s arrest, the woman, who now lives out of state, told police that she met Lynch in 2022 through the dating app Hinge. At the time the two were both living in Lawrence and met a handful of times to have sex at Lynch’s apartment. Near the end of summer, both had moved out of state, and the woman said the last time she heard from Lynch was in August of that year, when he wished her a happy birthday on Snapchat.
About five months later, in January 2023, the woman’s boyfriend received explicit videos and photos of the woman and Lynch that were sent via an anonymous Instagram account. The woman was instantly recognizable because of a unique scar on her back, according to the affidavit.
The woman told police that she was unaware that she was being filmed — the images show her from behind — and that she never consented to their activity being recorded or disseminated.
Lawrence police obtained a search warrant for the Instagram account and verified that it and a related phone number were both associated with Lynch.
Allegations contained in affidavits have not been proved in court.
Lynch, who identified himself as a graduate student during a recent status conference via Zoom, is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing in the matter on Nov. 4.
