A Lawrence man who engaged police in a nine-hour standoff at an apartment complex in 2023 was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Thursday, but he has already served the majority of his time.

The man, Shawn Anthony Daniels, 42, was originally charged in Douglas County District Court with one felony count of aggravated assault and one felony count of aggravated burglary, according to charging documents.

The charges related to an incident on Jan. 23, 2023, when Daniels is alleged to have threatened residents with a gun at the Naismith Place apartment complex in the 1500 block of West 25th Court before barricading himself in an apartment, as the Journal-World reported.

Daniels pleaded guilty to the aggravated assault charge in March as part of a plea agreement with the state in which the burglary charge was dismissed.

On Thursday, Judge Amy Hanley sentenced Daniels to 18 months. She said the conviction was a presumptive probation case in accordance with Kansas sentencing guidelines but that since a gun was involved Daniels would be required to serve his sentence in prison.

Hanley then awarded Daniels 471 days of time served, 15.7 months, for the time spent in the Douglas County jail and the time he spent at Larned State Hospital to restore his competency after he was initially declared incompetent to stand trial. She said that he would likely also be eligible for 20% good time credit from the Kansas Department of Corrections and that the calculations for that credit would be applied before he is transferred. She said if that happens, he will be released locally.
