Three adults and a pet displaced after fire at The Reserve

An apartment building was evacuated, and three adults and a pet were displaced Friday night after an apartment fire in southern Lawrence.

A Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical crew arrived at 2511 W. 31st St., the address for The Reserve apartment complex, after a 911 call reporting a structure fire about 8:30 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from LDCFM. Firefighters found a fire that was largely being contained by an overhead sprinkler system in a second-floor apartment of a three-story building, the release said.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 8:57 p.m., and it did not spread to other units, according to the release. Police assistance was requested when one resident initially refused to leave the building, but the resident eventually left on their own, the release said. Though residents of the affected unit were displaced, others in the building were able to return to their apartments later that night.

Investigators determined the cause to be accidental from a candle that ignited a blanket. There were no reports of injuries to residents or fire crews. Damage estimates were not available, according to the news release.
