No major injuries reported after police respond to gunshots heard downtown

The Lawrence Police Department described a chaotic scene Sunday in a Facebook post after police responded to the sound of gunshots downtown early that morning.

Officers in the area reported hearing several gunshots on Massachusetts Street just before 2 a.m. and rushed to the scene, where dozens of people scattered but nobody was found to be shot or severely injured, according to the post.

Officers are reviewing video from the scene and gathering evidence.

According to the post, a woman is believed to have arrived in the 700 block of Massachusetts Street to pick up her boyfriend when a man she didn’t know approached the vehicle. When her boyfriend arrived, the two men got in an argument before the approaching man and several other people got into a silver sedan and drove away, striking the woman’s boyfriend with the bumper of the vehicle and continuing into the street, where someone in the car fired at least five shots before leaving the scene, according to the post.

The man who was allegedly struck by the vehicle left the scene before speaking with police. The post alleged that many witnesses to the incident were intoxicated and either unwilling or unable to provide more information.
