The Olathe fire department’s bomb squad briefly responded to a National Guard facility in northern Lawrence on Tuesday, but few details were immediately available about why it was there.

Members of Olathe Fire’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team arrived at the Metcalf Memorial Armory, 200 S. Iowa St., just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday. After about 20 minutes on scene, one crew member came out of the back of the building carrying a small green ammunition box; the crew loaded it into an Olathe Fire vehicle and then left the scene. None of the members appeared to be in special bomb-protective gear.

Captain Mike Hall of Olathe Fire confirmed in an email to the Journal-World that the team had been “called to support the Kansas Army National Guard in Lawrence,” but provided no further details. A spokesperson with the Kansas Adjutant General’s Department of Public Affairs, Jane Welch, said that the situation was still developing and that her department would provide more information when it became available.

Welch said that the armory was home to offices for recruiters and for a unit of the 2nd Battalion, 635th Armor, which is currently deployed overseas.
