Lawrence man dies in weekend crash; wife and toddler injured

A Lawrence man was killed on Saturday, and his wife and child were injured in Nemaha County after a truck failed to stop at a stop sign.
William Joseph Novotny, 35, was driving a 2017 Honda CR-V west on U.S. Highway 36 around 11:40 a.m. in Nemaha County with his wife, Taylar Kathryn Deere-Novotny, 33, and their 3-year-old child, according to a crash report from the Kansas Highway Patrol. Nemaha County is northwest of Lawrence near the Nebraska border.
At the intersection of U.S. 36 and West Road about 5 miles west of Fairview, Kansas, a 2017 Dodge Ram driven by Mark Eugene Ditmars, 37, of Washington, Kansas, failed to stop at a stop sign going south and hit Novotny’s vehicle on its side. Both vehicles came to rest on the south side of the intersection, the report said.
Novotny was killed in the crash, Deere-Novotny received a serious injury and the 3-year-old received a minor injury. Ditmars and his passenger, Jonathan Roy Ditmars, 36, of Washington, Kansas, were both seriously injured, according to the report. Everyone involved was wearing a safety belt, according to the report.
